Resilient Eggs: Highly Successful Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting Sites Vary in Their Characteristics

چکیده
Sea turtle nest success, defined as the number of eggs in a that successfully hatch and emerge, is closely linked to environmental conditions. Interacting biotic abiotic factors influence hatching hatchling emergence success. To date, combinations multiple interacting together, which result highly successful sea nests are not well understood. Using 25 years historic data local expert experience, we identified five historically loggerhead ( Caretta caretta ) nesting beaches (hotspots) along Florida (United States) Atlantic coast measured environments with Principal component analysis was used reduce 12 variables so relative contributions sand characteristics, temperatures, moisture, location were considered. The differed among broadly segregated into two distinct climates: subtropical (hot humid) warm-temperate (warm dry). We found at sites, compared characterized by gradients contrasting ways. Nest locations predominantly mid-beach sites but clustered higher elevations closer base dune climate sites. Collectively, hotspots represent mosaic providing conditions promote emergence. This new perspective on consistently beach traits demonstrate key habitat vary prevailing type should be managed accordingly.

Long-Term Climate Forcing in Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting
The long-term variability of marine turtle populations remains poorly understood, limiting science and management. Here we use basin-scale climate indices and regional surface temperatures to estimate loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Borrowing from fisheries research, our models investigate how oceanographic processes influence juvenil...

Pulmonary CO diffusion capacity ( D L C O ) , lung volume (VL), oxygen uptake (Vo ) and pulmonary blood flow (QL) were measured simultaneously in the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) (8—11 kg) using a gas rebreathing technique (syringe pump ventilation). Calculated D L C O and Vo values in the loggerhead turtle are approximately twice those of non-varanid reptiles and about 25 %...
متن کاملDe novo transcriptome assembly of loggerhead sea turtle nesting of the Colombian Caribbean
Loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta is widely distributed in the oceans of tropical and subtropical latitude. This turtle is an endangered species due to anthropic and natural factors that have decreased their population levels. In this study, RNA sequencing and de-novo assembly of genes expressed in blood were performed. The raw FASTQ files have been deposited on NCBI's SRA database with acc...
متن کاملEarlier nesting by loggerhead sea turtles following sea surface warming
The onset of spring, noted by the timing of wildlife migratory and breeding behaviors, has been occurring earlier over the past few decades. Here, we examine 15 years of loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, nesting patterns along a 40.5 km beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast. This small section of beach is considered to be the most important nesting area for this threatened species in the west...
متن کاملComplexity and variation in loggerhead sea turtle life history.
Juvenile loggerhead sea turtles spend more than a decade in the open ocean before returning to neritic waters to mature and reproduce. It has been assumed that this transition from an oceanic to neritic existence is a discrete ontogenetic niche shift. We tested this hypothesis by tracking the movements of large juveniles collected in a neritic foraging ground in North Carolina, USA. Our work sh...
